NIT Bracket 2012 Cleveland State Earns Bid

The are headed to the postseason despite losing in the Horizon League Tournament in the semifinals. The Vikings earned a No. 6 seed to the NIT, and they will play at Stanford on Tuesday night at 11pm. the game will be televised by ESPN2, and the Cardinal carries a 21-11 record into the game.

Stanford had a sub-par record this season in a very weak Pac-12 conference, finishing just 10-8 in the league. The Vikings have hope for a victory as well. Butler, a fellow Horizon League member, beat the Cardinal in Maples Pavillion 71-66 on December 21. That was one of just two non-conference losses by Stanford,t he other coming at the hands of Syracuse.

Stanford does not come into the NIT with much momentum. They were just 6-8 int heir last 14 games, while Cleveland State also struggled by losing six of its past eight to fall out of the Horizon League race.

Michigan State earned the fourth No. 1 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament with a spectacular performance in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans got rewarded with a regional stocked with tournament champions.

No. 2 Missouri won the Big 12 Tournament, No. 4 Louisville ran through the Big East Tournament, No. 5 New Mexico took home the Mountain West title, and a slew of other tournament winners will join the Spartans in the West. The biggest surprise of Selection Sunday so far is in the West, too: Iona will play BYU in the First Four in Dayton for the right to earn a No. 14 seed and play No. 3 Marquette.

Bangladesh lost last 5 wickets for only 17 runs, in a match they should have comfortably won, to hand Pakistan a victory by 21 runs in the opening match of the Asia 2012.

Chasing 263, Bangladesh looked in a precarious position at 135 for 5, inspite of Tamim Iqbal’s 64. But Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain had other plans. Batting with purpose and maturity, Shakib scored freely taking Bangladesh decisively towards the target. Young Nasir was equal to task, matching Shakib stroke for stroke. The partnership ballooned to 89 runs in 14.5 overs, and looked capable of taking Bangladesh to the target. Requiring 39 off 40 balls, very few would have put their money on Pakistan, but Umar Gul had other plans. He removed Nasir in the 44^th over, who trying to turn the ball off his pads, was beaten for pace. In the next over Saeed Ajmal had the measure of Abdur Razzak and Mashrafe Mortaza. Gul then disturbed Safiul Islam’s timbre with a brilliant yorker. Watching this collapse from the other end, now with only one wicket left, Shakib needed to take urgent action. Gul though had the last laugh when he had Shakib playing on, thus giving Pakistan a victory.

Earlier, Pakistan had a collapse of their own, when they went from 135 for 0 to 198 for 7 before Gul took the score to competitive 262, with a career best innings of 39. Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed scored fifties at the top, 89 and 54, respectively.
